Datadog vs New Relic: true cost
Datadog
The broadest platform, priced per host with every module billed on its own line.
New Relic
One usage pool priced by data ingested, plus a per-seat charge for full users.
Cost across three workloads
| Workload | Datadog | New Relic | Cheaper |
|---|---|---|---|
Startup 5 hosts, 50 GB/mo, 3 users | $80 | $198 | Datadog |
Growth 25 hosts, 300 GB/mo, 10 users | $405 | $971 | Datadog |
Scale 100 hosts, 2 TB/mo, 25 users | $1,700 | $3,136 | Datadog |
Datadog gotcha
The bill stacks because Infrastructure, APM, and Logs are each priced separately, and log indexing is a second charge on top of ingestion. On-demand rates run about 20% over the annual numbers.
New Relic gotcha
The 100 GB free tier feels generous until a couple of chatty services blow past it, and the real cost is usually the $99-per-full-user charge, not the data. Standard caps you at 5 full users, so growing teams get pushed to a quote.
